General Information

GT Required Training Info:

 

A minimum of thirty clock hours of professional development that includes nature and needs of GT students, identification and assessment of GT students' needs, and curriculum and instruction for GT students is required for teachers who provide instruction and services that are a part of the district's defined GT services. Teachers are required to have completed the thirty hours of professional development prior to their assignment to the district's GT services.

 

Teachers without required training who are assigned to provide instruction and services that are part of the district's defined GT services are required to complete the thirty hour training within one semester (19 TAC §89.2(1)).

 

Administrators and counselors who have authority for service decisions are required to complete a minimum of six hours of professional development that includes nature and needs of GT students and service options for GT students (19 TAC §89.2(4)).

Teachers who provide instruction and services that are a part of the district's defined GT services receive a minimum of six hours annually of professional development in GT education that is related to state teacher education standards.

Texas State Plan for the Education of GT Students

 

The Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students guides school districts regarding student assessment, program design, curriculum and instruction, professional development, and family and community involvement as each relates to the education of gifted students.

 

The State Plan was revised in 2019. The most recent version, in English and Spanish, is available at the TEA website.
